Powell Gardens Field Trip


Date: August 17th
Time: 1 pm
Cost: $7.25 per girl, includes an activity patch
Adults are regular admission of $10.00

We will be earning our Gardener and Flower Badges.  After the hour long program we are able to explore the gardens on our own. 
There is a small fountain the girls can splash and play in.  They are more than welcome to bring their swimsuits, towels and water shoes/flip flops.

We are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy before or afterwards.

Legacy Badge: Flowers


Naturalist: Flowers

 

 

1. Uncover the science of a flower:

            * Go on a flower hunt to find your favorite flower and five other kinds in your town. Record or sketch             what you see.

            * Plant a seed or bulb of your favorite flower and grow it until it blooms.

            * Interview a botanist, ask why they became a flower specialist.

 


2. Look under the petals:

            * Dye a flower by putting the cut stem into water with food coloring. Keep track of the changes.

            * Find out about why flowers smell. Watch a fragrant flower and record who or what visits it.

            * Find out about different flower families. What are some other flowers in your favorite's family?

 


3. Find out how flowers help people:

            * Find a flower that turns into a fruit and make a snack using that fruit or an edible flower.

            * Find out about three different medicinal flowers or herbs and how they help people.

            * Try a recipe for bath beads or another product that uses flower scents to help people relax. Does it             work?

 


4. Have fun with flowers;

            * Make a flower necklace.

            * Make a work of art with dried or pressed flowers.

            * Make your own flowers out of craft materials.

 


5. Send a message in flower code:

            * Make a bouquet of flowers.

            * Make a corsage (broach or bracelet) of flowers.

            * Make a flower arrangement in a vase or other container.

1. Visit a garden:

            * Visit an outdoor garden.

            * Visit an indoor garden.

            * Visit a landscaped garden.


 

2. Explain garden design:

            * Plan your dream garden.

            * Look into surprising gardens like rooftop gardens, English landscape gardens, midnight gardens, or             gardens meant to attract certain insects or animals.

            * Make a mini Zen garden.


 

3. Learn how to choose garden plants:

            * Find six plants that will grow in your hardiness zone.

            * Find six plants that grow in different ways (seed, bulb, roots).

            * Find six seasonal plants.

 



4. Experiment with seeds. Use an empty egg carton and 12 seeds and do the following:

            * Experiment with soil. Try using different amounts and types of soil.

            * Experiment with water. Try watering sections with varying amounts or frequency.

            * Experiment with sunlight. Cover part of your carton.


 

5. Grow your own garden:

            * Plant an outdoor garden.

            * Plant an indoor garden.

            * Help with planting at a community or school garden.
