             Retiring Old Glory

When the United States flag (Old Glory) becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag, but this does not mean that one should simply drop the entire flag (intact) into a fire. Each ceremony includes the proper methods of burning the flag.

Troop 96 solicits worn, torn, faded or badly soiled U.S. flags from the local community to “properly” dispose of during campouts. Scouts in the troop actively participate in this solemn and respectful ceremony. A flag is retired at each one of the troop’s many campouts throughout the year. Other units camping nearby are invited to attend and participate in the ceremony as well.

(If you would like the troop to properly retire your U. S. Flag, please contact us.)
