Parent Guide

This Parent Guide provides you with answers to questions about Pack 34’s program. In it, you will find information about uniforms, meetings, awards and special events, and the role of parents in Cub Scouting. If you have any questions not answered in this brief guide, please contact your son’s Den Leader or one of the Pack leaders, or our Cubmaster, Mark Horman.

The Cub Scout Organization

Cub Scout Pack 34 is made up of about 40-50 boys and their families in the Palisades District of the Blue Grass Council.  Our program depends entirely on the planning and participation of the pack parents who make up the leadership of the Pack and help support activities throughout the year.  ~"Many hands make a lighter load"~

Pack 34 consists of several small groups of about five to ten boys called "Dens".  Boys are grouped into Dens by grade level.

Our youngest cubs are the Tigers. Tiger Cubs are first graders. They form a team with an adult partner who shares in the leadership of the Tiger Den.  For Tiger Cubs, the leadership is shared by all the adults in the Den.  One parent serves as the Tiger Den Leader, helping to see that the den program is organized and ensuring communication between the Den and the Pack.

Second graders make up the Wolf Cub Scout Den and third graders form the Bear Cub Scout Den. Boys in fourth and fifth grades belong to Webelos Dens and take part in more challenging experiences, such as overnight Den camping with parents, which helps them prepare to enter Boy Scouts mid-year of fifth grade.

Boys may join Cub Scouts at any age. For example, they do not have to start out as a Tiger.

Each Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Den has an adult Den Leader, an Assistant Den Leader, and other adults who help plan the Den’s activities. These leaders are themselves parents of boys in the Cub Scout program and they depend on the support and assistance of all the other parents in their Dens.  Den Chiefs from the Boy Scout Troop, also often assist with leadership and guidance with the Webelos Dens.

All the Dens together form Pack 34. We meet together as a Pack the last Monday of the month.

The Cubmaster guides the Pack.  The Pack is also led and supported by a committee of parents to help with organization and decision making for the Pack.  Ask how you can help!

Immanuel Baptist Church is our Charter Organization, meaning they support us and allow us to hold meetings and events at their Church.  However, their is no religious affiliation between the Pack and the Church.

Meetings

We welcome and encourage you to participate in our Cub Scout meetings during the year. All meetings, outings, and events are open to all parents at any time.

Den meetings:  Dens meetings are held every week on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Immanuel Baptist Church.  At least one parent is expected to accompany his or her Cub Scout at all meetings and outings.  Some Dens may have scheduled outings at this time, or some other time during the week.  Per BSA policy, two-deep leadership is required and observed at all times.  No scout should ever be left alone with another adult at meetings, campouts, outings, etc.
The last Monday of the month, all the Dens join together to celebrate the achievements and present awards earned for that month.

Pack meetings:
Pack meetings are for all the boys of Pack 34 and their families. We encourage the whole family to attend.  The Pack meeting consists of Songs, Cheers, and/or Skits performed by the scouts, in addition to an awards presentation.  Pack meetings are fun, fun, fun!!!   Plan to arrive a little early for each meeting.

Special events: Almost every month, we have planned special events and outings. In the past, these included Pack hikes, campouts, a winter lock-in, Pinewood Derby, Blue and Gold Banquet, just to name a few.  Details will be announced at Pack meetings, listed on the Pack website calendar or you can contact your Den Leader or Cubmaster for further information.

Leader and Committee meetings: The leaders of Pack 34 meet once each month to discuss organizational matters, planning for future events and exchange ideas. In addition, a monthly council roundtable is held the 2nd Thursday of each month for scout leaders of the Bluegrass Council, to provide leadership training and ideas.

A schedule of Pack meetings and events for the Scouting year can be found on the Pack Calendar on this site.
