Cub Scout Vocabulary

Cub Scouting has a language all its own! Some words seem strange and can leave new parents and scouts lost in translation. Please feel free to look this over and start becoming familiar with the terms you are likely to learn throughout Cub Scouting.

Cub Scout - A Cub Scout is different from a Boy Scout. Cub Scouts are boys ages 7-11 or 1st grade - 5th grade. Boys are separated by age and/or grade. After 5th grade, they become Boy Scouts.

Den - A den is a group of boys of the same age or grade. For example, Tigers are in first grade OR are seven years old. That means a boy who turns 7 before first grade is still eligible to join the den, as is a boy who is in first grade but hasn't reached his 7th birthday yet.

Pack - Your pack is the entire group of boys 1st grade - 5th grade, their respective leaders and any adults that function in an administrative role in our Pack Committee. Dens meet weekly and the entire Pack meets once a month.

Akela - Akela (pronounced Ah-KAY-la) is a good leader. Moms, dads, teachers, den leaders even older siblings can be considered Akela. Akela is the term used for any responsible adult in charge.

Den Leader - A den leader is an adult (of at least 21 years old) in charge of the one of the grade/age-specific dens. They will be responsible for teaching your boy and awarding him his advancements. In Pack 34, a leader usually moves with the boys through the entire process so that he has the same leader from Tiger year to Webelos year.

Webelos - Pronounce We-Buh-Loh-s. The meaning of the word is a Cub Scout "secret" and is learned when the boys earn their first badge!
