PINEWOOD DERBY

Every year our boys look forward to Pinewood Derby Race Day!

Scouts will recieve materials to craft thier own Pinewood Derby car.

They boys can decorate thier car any way they would like.
The pack will vote for the "Scout's Favorite" car.
This is the car the boys thought was decorated the best!

Trophies are awarded for winning scouts in first, second and third places
as well as the "Golden Turtle Award" for the scout that finishes last!!!

We will be holding a "Sibling Heat" for the scout's siblings to participate.
Sibling must adhere to same racing rules as the scouts.
You must purchase your sibling's kit in order for your other children to race.
(Approx. $5.00)

We are also holding an "Adult-Any Thing Goes" heat. (16 years and older)
You must buy your kit and can make any modifications you would like!
Should be fun to watch the grown ups act like kids!!!

PINEWOOD DERBY RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Derby Car Dimensions - Wood

·          The official BSA wood block must be used.  No after market bodies are permitted, unless sanctioned by BSA.

·          The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

·          The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

·          The car must have 1 ¾ inch clearance between the wheels.

·          The overall height of the car shall not exceed 3 inches.

·          The car must have 3/8 inch clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.

·          The block may be shaped in any way that is desired.

·          For staging at the start:  Cars shall have a leading edge which is flat and parallel with the axles.

·          The leading edge should be between ½ inch and ¾ inches above the track.

·          Cars which ‘ride-up’ on or wrap around the staging pegs may be run backwards, or disqualified, at the judges’ discretion.

·          No part of the car may extend beyond the front bumper, which rests against the starting pin.

·          NOTE:  An electronic finish line will be used; it is recommended that extreme needle-nose designs be avoided.

Wheels

·          Official BSA wheels must be used.

·          The wheels may not be cut, drilled, or beveled.

·          You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.

Axles

·          Official BSA axels 9nails) must be used.

·          The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.

·          Only dry fine lubricant may be used.

·          Cars may only be lubricated prior to or during inspection and not afterwards or during a race.

Weights and attachments

·          The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.

·          The official weight scale that is used at check-in shall be considered final.

·          Weight may be added to the car and will be considered part of the car for purposes of all measurements.

·          ‘Weight” is considered to be any material on the car that is not provided in the kit.

·          All weight must be securely fastened to the car.  Weight shall be passive, i.e. non-moveable, non-magnetic, and non-sticky, etc.

Car Modifications

·          Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.

·          The car must not ride on any spring.

·          No starting devices.  The car must be freewheeling.

·          No loose materials of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.

Misc Rules

·          Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.

·          If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make repair.

·          Each car must pass inspection by official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.

·          The inspection committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications.

·          If a car leaves the track, runs of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc. the heat will be rerun.  If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and automatically loses that race.  If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run a third time, but without the disqualified car.

RAIN GUTTER REGATTA

The Raingutter Regatta is similar to the Pinewood Derby
except that the models are miniature sail boats.

They boys can decorate their boat any way they would like.
The pack will vote for the "Scout's Favorite" boat.
This is the boat the boys thought was decorated the best!

RAIN GUTTER REGATTA RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Although the seas are only 10-foot lengths of raingutter filled with water,
and the ships a mere 7 inches long, the race is a very exciting event.

Each boy will build his own boat with help from parents and leaders.
He also provides the wind for the sail with his own lung power.

Each boy will receive a boat kit from the pack to construct their boat.

In an effort to promote fair competition and stable boats,
we ask that catamaran hull designed boats NOT be used.

M
odifications to the hulls are allowed as long as the boat meets the specifications as set by the pack.

SPACE DERBY

The Space Derby is also similar to the Pinewood Derby except that the models are miniature "rockets",  powered by three rubber bands - that travel along a heavy monofilament fishing line.

Scouts will recieve materials to craft thier own Space Derby rocket.

They boys can decorate thier rocket any way they would like.
The pack will vote for the "Scout's Favorite" rocket.
This is the rocket the boys thought was decorated the best!

The rockets are blocks of balsa wood that are carved and decorated by the boys,
with guidance from their parents or other family members.
The Cub Scout puts a rubber band powered propeller on it.

The Leaders will twist the rubber bands on race day so that the same number of twists are applied to each rocket.
The Scout rocket then races against other Scout's rockets down a track of fishing line.

All rockets must pass the following inspection to qualify for the race:

1. Only basic materials supplied in BSA kits may be used.
2. Rocket body may be no longer than 7 inches, not including propeller and fins.
3. There are no restrictions on weight or design of rocket.
4. All scouts shall have no more then three rubber bands in their rocket.
5. Scout shall use rocket built for this year, no previous year rockets will be allowed.
6. Every boy brings his rocket to the inspection table to have his entry checked and numbered.
7. Then the scout goes to the registration table where his name and rocket's number are entered on a heat sheet.
8. The gatekeeper will attach and release the rockets.
9. Rockets will be taken to the registration table for recording.
