Summer Camping List


Summer Camp is a time honored rite of passage for many new scouts. For many it is their first time away from home alone, so the right gear is important. Due to the different activities available at each camp, the precise list will vary, but this list is a good start.

Paperwork

_______  Completed Medical Exam Forms - Turn into trip leader prior to trip. Other Camp forms as required.
_______  Copy of Insurance Card - Photocopy of front and back of insurance card.

Clothing

_______  Bandana or Handkerchief
_______  Belt
_______  Hat (Brim)
_______  Hiking Boots
_______  Hiking Pants (Long)
_______  Hiking Pants (Shorts)
_______  Pants (Long)
_______  Pants (Short) *
_______  Rain Gear
_______  Sandals - Not all camps allow open toe shoes. Check first! *
_______  Shirt (Long Sleeve)
_______  Shirt (Short Sleeve, Wicking )
_______  Shoes (lightweight)
_______  Sleeping Clothes - Never sleep in the same clothing you eat or cook in!
_______  Socks - One pair per day.
_______  Socks (Heavy) - For hiking boots
_______  Socks (Liner) *
_______  Swim Suit - Trunks for boys, one piece for girls.
_______  Swimming Shirt - One with UV protection is often a good idea. *
_______  Underwear - One pair per day.
_______  Uniform - Most camps will require both class A (full uniform) and class B (troop tee shirts) uniform attire for different events.

Gear

_______  Bicycle - Check to see if allowed. Must be labeled with scout name. *
_______  Bicycle Helmet - Required if bicycling is on the agenda. Must be labeled with scout name. *
_______  Bicycle Pack - If bringing bike. One that hangs off the handle bars, or seat is not too expensive. *
_______  Bicycle Repair Kit (Small) - Basic wrenches, screwdrivers, and tube repair items. *
_______  Binoculars *
_______  Books *
_______  Camera *
_______  Camera Tripod - Small (6") one for digital camera works great. *
_______  Compass *
_______  Day Pack
_______  Duffle Bag
_______  Eating Utensils - Check with the camp to determine if this is needed. *
_______  Fishing Equipment & License - Check with camp on fishing opportunities. *
_______  Flashlight
_______  Folding Chair *
_______  Garbage Bags - Good to keep things dry, or for storing dirty clothing. *
_______  GPS *
_______  Ground Cloth or Tarp - Sometimes you just need to create a dry place. *
_______  Hand Sanitizer *
_______  Head Lamp *
_______  Head Net - For mosquitoes *
_______  Hiking Poles *
_______  Hydration Bladder *

_______  Merit Badge Books - Always best to bring your own books for the Merit Badges you are working on. Bring pre-requisite paperwork as appropriate.

_______  Sleeping Bag - Not needed if the camp supplies bedding, but that is unusual.
_______  Sleeping Pad - Not needed if the camp supplies bunks. *
_______  Soap - Biodegradable
_______  Stuff Sacks - Keep your gear organized.
_______  Sun Glasses - You're living outside, protect the eyes! Make sure they protect against 100% of UV rays or they will do more harm than good.
_______  Swimming Goggles *
_______  Tent - Most camps supply tents or cabins, but check to be certain. *
_______  Toilet Paper - It never hurts to have your own roll, just in case. *
_______  Towel (Large)
_______  Water Bottle - Stay hydrated!

_______  Prescription Medications - In original container clearly marked with name and dosage. Scouts are usually required to turn them in to the adult health officer. *
