Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cub Scouts the same as Boy Scouts?
Cub Scouting is a program of the Boy Scouts of America—so in that sense, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are both members of the same organization. However, they are entirely different programs: Cub Scouting is a family-oriented program designed specifically to address the needs of younger boys. The Boy Scout program begins when boys bridge from Cub Scouts (entering 6th grade or age 11).
What does Cub Scouting offer my son?
Cub Scouting offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.

What are the responsibilities of a parent?
  • Provide help and support for the den and pack
  • Work with your son on advancement projects and activities
  • Additional parent help, such as fundraising and committee support is encouraged and appreciated
What are the age requirements to join Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts must be at least in first grade, or age 7. They will be assigned to dens with similar aged boys as follows: Tiger Cubs (entering first grade, or age 7), Wolf Cub Scouts (entering second grade, or age 8), Bear Cub Scouts (entering third grade, or age 9), Webelos Scouts (entering fourth or fifth grade, or age 10). Boys who are older than 10, or who have completed the fifth grade, cannot join Cub Scouting, but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or Venturing program.

How often do Cub Scouts meet?
Pack 460 dens meet on different days and times.  Contact the den leader or cubmaster for details.  Many den meetings are held at Friedens Lutheran Church.  Beyond that, a den may hold a special activity, such as a service project or visit to a local museum, in place of or in addition to one of the weekly meetings. Den leaders coordinate scheduling special events with parents so as many scouts as possible can participate.
Does the Scouting Program affect participation in other activities?
The Cub Scout program is designed to compliment many other extracurricular activities. Boys who participate in organized sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, etc., or academic-based extracurricular activities like music, art, science, etc., can be recognized for these activities through Cub Scout belt loops (worn on their uniform) and pins.
Do Cub Scouts go camping?
Yes, but they ease into it. Organized camping is a creative, educational experience in cooperative group living in the outdoors. It uses the natural surroundings to contribute to physical, mental, spiritual, and social growth.

Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Cub Scouts can go camping on pack overnighters. Cub Scouts' brothers and sisters can even go on these pack overnighters. In most cases, each Scout will camp with a parent or guardian. Every young camper (scout and/or sibling) is responsible to a specific adult.

Webelos dens go on overnight campouts. Each Webelos Scout camps with his parent or guardian. The campers learn the basics of Boy Scout camping, under the direction of the Webelos den leader. Sometimes, leaders from a Boy Scout troop may join you. Webelos dens may also have joint overnight campouts with a Boy Scout troop. Each Webelos Scout has a parent or guardian with him on these joint campouts, too.
What supplies and equipment are needed to participate in Cub Scouting?
At minimum, each boy in Cub Scouting will need a uniform and a handbook. Each year, the handbook changes, as does the cap and neckerchief, but other uniform parts remain the same for the first three years (Tiger Cub, Wolf Cub Scout, and Bear Cub Scout). When a boy enters a Webelos den, he will need to obtain a khaki-and-olive uniform.
Additional supplies and equipment may be needed for certain activities, such as camping trips.
How much does it cost?
The annual dues are similar to playing one youth sport for one season. The exact cost for registration, dues, awards, and supplies varies based on the time of year that a boy joins the pack. There may also be additional, optional events that have separate costs associated with them. Many of these costs can be offset with fund raising activities, potentially making the out-of-pocket expense negligible. Please use the "Contact Our Pack" link above for more information regarding the exact cost of dues and registration.
Must I be a US citizen to join Cub Scouting?
Citizenship is not required of youth or adult members.
