Girl Scout History & Traditions

Happy 100th Anniversary, Girl Scouts!
In 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA marked 100 years of inspiring girls and young women with the ideals of courage, confidence and character. The first United States Girl Guide (scout) troop met with 18 girls on March 12 in Savannah, Georgia. In 1913, the first bade "Child Nurse" was earned; badges then were hand embroidered! The same year, national headquarters were established in Washington, DC and the first handbook, How Girls Can Help Their County, was published.

Girl Scout “Special Days”:
Oct. 31 – Juliette Low’s Birthday
February 22 – Worldwide Thinking Day
March 12 – Girl Scout Birthday
April 22 – Leader Appreciation Day (now GS Volunteer Day)

The Girl Scout Quiet Sign: Hold the right hand up with all 5 fingers extended to signal to the group that it is time to be quiet.

The Girl Scout Motto: “Be Prepared”

The Girl Scout Slogan: “Do a Good Turn Daily”

The Girl Scout Sign:
The official GS greeting. The right hand is raised shoulder high with the three middle fingers extended and the thumb crossing over the palm to hold down the little finger. These fingers represent the three parts of the promise.

Singing:
The songs we sing together are part of our oral history and provide a link with Girl
Scouts and Guides of ages past and all over the world. Whenever Girl Scouts get together in large or small groups, the common bond of singing together builds friendship and understanding and provides an avenue for informal music education.
