Cub Scouting's Purpose

In 1930, the Boy Scouts of America launched a home- and neighborhood-based program for boys aged nine to eleven. The program focused on nature, hobbies, games, preparation for Boy Scouts, and above all, character. While the Cub Scouting program has changed over the last 80 years, now admitting boys as young as six as Tiger Cubs, it has grown from 5,102 boys and 243 packs in 1930 to almost 2 million boys in more than 53,000 packs today, the focus of the program is still on preparing boys to become better adults.

Boys, families, leaders, and chartered organizations all work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting:

 1. To influence the development of character and encourage spiritual growth

2. To develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship

3. To encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body

4. To improve understanding within the family

5. To strengthen the ability to get along with and to respect others

6. To foster a sense of personal achievement b developing new interest and skills

7. To show how to be helpful and to do one's best

8. To provide fun and exciting new things to do

9. To prepare Cubs to become Boy Scouts

We achieve these purposes by teaching the ideals of Cub Scouting, which are represented by the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout Motto.  Cub Scouts are expected to memorize the pledge and motto. We seek to make them real in their lives and hope that you will encourage your son as he strives to do so.

Pack 131 is active in the outdoors several times a year. The whole family is invited to participate in pack events. We have a Weekend Camp-Out at one of the state or county parks in the area in July and in the fall we camp and use the facilities available at Camp Agawam in Lake Orion for our weekend camping trip. When we are not camping we try to have an outdoor activity on a Saturday such as nature walks or sledding at an area park. There may be different activities at these events but the aims will always encompass the following for the participants: Do your best and Have Fun.
