What is Cub Scouts?

Cub Scouting is fun! But it is fun with a purpose. Woven into all the fun is an inspired program that really works. Tried and proven methods are used that transfer traditional values, build character, and develop leadership skills -- all in the context of fun and family togetherness.
(BSA: Operation Tiger Mania)

Fun with a purpose, that statement really says a lot about what scouting is. When most people think of Cub Scouts they think of camping and other outdoor activities. Although camping and other outdoor activities is a part of Cub Scouts there is so much more to being a scout.

To the Cub Scout they are just having fun and making friends while doing age appropriate activities with boys of the same age, boys that live in their neighborhood or go to their school. To the Cub Scout they are just having fun with their peers and family members while completing achievements and earning awards in the form of belt loops, pins and patches which they proudly wear. Behind every achievement, completed elective, belt loop, pin or patch earned there is a purpose.

What is the Purpose Behind the Fun?

The Cub Scouting program has 10 purposes related to the overall mission of the Boy Scouts of America. Every Cub Scouting activity should help fulfill one of these purposes.

1. Character Development

6. Respectful Relationships

2. Spiritual Growth

7. Personal Achievement

3. Good Citizenship

8. Friendly Service

4. Sportsmanship and Fitness

9. Fun and Adventure

5. Family Understanding

10. Preparation for Boy Scouts
