- Headlamp (LED preferred) I personally like the ones that run on two or three AAA batteries so they are not so heavy. Scott's favorite headlamp:
Petzl Zipka Plus 2 Headlamp $45. (REI.com)
- Sleeping pad (*KEY PIECE OF GEAR*) Suggestions: Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest SOlite Sleeping Pad $19.99, Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp Sleeping Pad (Inflatable) $69 & up.
- Sleeping Bag (*KEY PIECE OF GEAR*) Suggestions: Marmot Trestles 15 Sleeping Bag $115 or equivalent. Sleeping bags are one piece of gear you really need to spend a little money on because they can make or break your trip. I highly suggest a synthetic mummy bag with hood rated at 15 degrees. These bags are light weight, very packable, warm when wet and affordable.
- Knife suggestion: Victorinox Huntsman Swiss Army Knife $35. When it comes to pocket knives (especially for Scouts) it's really hard to beat a Swiss Army Knife, they were the original multi-tool! When purchasing a knife for a Scout, remember they are only allowed to possess folding knives with a main blade no more than 3.5" long.
- Water Bottle Suggestion: 32oz Nalgene wide-mouth water bottle $10.50. Every Scout should carry one of these, they serve many uses other than just holding water.
- Hydration Pack (at least 2 liter/70 ounce capacity) There are many options available. For Scouts a hydration pack with enough room for a full water bladder, lunch and a light jacket is ideal.
- Compass Suggestion: Suunto A-10 Compass or similar $15. This is a good starter compass!
- Mug: Obviously there are a ton of options out there and this is not really a neccesity but here is my favorite camp mug:REI Tripod Mug-12oz $7.50, REI Tripod Mug-18oz $9.50 (REI.com)
- Dishes: GSI® Cascadian 7-Pc. Camp Table Setting $9.99 (Scoutstuff.org) I recommend this set for all Scouts; it includes a plate, bowl, cup, butter knife, spoon, fork, and mesh bag.
