Religious Recognitions

Girl Scouts and Faith

My Promise, My Faith Pin

Everything in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law. The Girl Scout Law includes many of the principles and values common to most faiths. Thus, while a secular organization, Girl Scouts has, since the movement began, encouraged girls to take spiritual journeys via their faiths' religious recognitions.

Girls of all grade levels can now earn the My Promise, My Faith pin developed by Girl Scouts of the USA. This pin, which girls can earn once a year, complements existing religious recognitions and allows all girls to further strengthen the connection between their faith and Girl Scouts (see images of the pins below). A girl earns the My Promise, My Faith pin by carefully examining the Girl Scout Law and directly tying it to tenets of her faith. Requirements for this pin are included in The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting for all levels, see a summary (PDF).

To locate your local Girl Scout council, visit the GSUSA Council Finder.

Religious Recognitions

Religious recognitions are created by national religious organizations/committees to encourage the spiritual growth of their youth members and reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting. While My Promise, My Faith helps girls connect Girl Scouting with their faith, the religious recognitions programs help girls grow stronger in and learn more specifically about their faith.

Each religious organization/committee develops and administers its own program. The To Serve God religious recognitions brochure shows the religious recognitions that have been created by various faith groups. You can find this brochure, a video that explains the religious recognitions programs, and other resources for collaborating with the faith community at P.R.A.Y. Publishing: http://www.praypub.org/partner_gsusa.htm.

Some religious organizations are not affiliated with P.R.A.Y. or may not have a national office; to learn about their religious recognitions, contact their local leaders.

by Alice C. Shanley

Dear lovely lady dressedin blue

So loyal, obedient, kind and true
Inall the things I do.

In thought, inword, and deed,
To be thrifty, cheerful and clean,
This is what Imean.

Oh sweet Mother, Heavenly Queen,
Guide me from above
See thatall my little tasks
Will be tender works of love.

Help me on towomanhood
My Girl Scout Law to keep.
Always be my guiding light,
I praysome day we'll meet.

**A Reading for Muslim Girl Scouts From theQur’an

Abraham said to his father Azar, “Do you take idols for gods? Isurely see you and your people in evident error.”

And likewise he showedAbraham the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth that he may be ofthose who have certitude.

When the night covered him, he saw a star andsaid, “This is my Lord.” But when the moon set, he said, “Unless my Lord guidesme, I will surely be among those who have gone astray.”

When he saw thesun rising in splendor, he said, “This is my Lord; this is the greatest of all.”But when the sun set, he said, “O my people! I am indeed free from your guilt ofgiving partners to Allah.”

“For me, I have set my face, firmly and truly, towards the One who has created the heavens and the earth, and I will neverascribe partners to Allah.”

**Hindu Prayer for Peace

May the waters beappeasing.
May herbs be wholesome,and
May trees and plants bringpeace to all.
May all beneficentbeings bring peace to us.
May yourVedic Law propagate peace all through the world.
May all things be a source of peace tous.
And may your peace itselfbestow peace on all, and
May that peace come to me also.

**Prayers ForAmerica (Baha’i)

O Thou kind Lord! This gathering is turning to Thee. These hearts are radiant with Thy love. These minds and spirits are exhilaratedby the message of Thy glad-tidings. O God! Let this American democracy becomeglorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees, andrender this just government victorious. Confirm this revered nation to upraisethe standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace, tobecome thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations of theworld. O God! This American nation is worthy of Thy favors and is deserving ofThy mercy. Make it precious and near to Thee through Thy bounty and bestowal. -'Abdu'lBaha

O Thou kind Lord!Thou hast created all humanity from the same stock. Thou hast decreed that allshall belong to the same household. In Thy Holy Presence they are all Thyservants, and all mankind are sheltered beneath Thy Tabernacle; all havegathered together at Thy Table of Bounty; all are illumined through the light ofThy Providence.

O God! Thou art kind to all, Thou hast provided for all, dost shelter all, conferred life upon all. Thou hast endowed each and all withtalents and faculties, and all are submerged in the Ocean of Thy Mercy.

OThou kind Lord! Unite all. Let the religions agree and make the nations one, sothat they may see each other as one family and the whole earth as one home. Maythey all live together in perfect harmony.
