SCOUT is the first rank a boy is awarded when he joins scouting.

Tenderfoot is the first rank a scout earns.  It is a skill based rank.  Typically, a scout has attended a campout or two and has started learning about the outdoors.

Second Class Scout has learned more than when he began.  He has mastered the skills to read a map and use a compass.  He has also learned how to handle an ax and make a fire.

First Class Scout has demonstrated that he can take care of himself.  He can now assume the responsibility of teaching others basic skills and fulfilling leadership roles in the troop.

Star Scout must prepare to give back to the community.  He must complete community service and serve as a leader in his troop. He must fulfill merit badge requirements as well.

Life Scout will be a scout for life.  He serves his Troop and community.  He prepares himself for Eagle while completing leadership and community service requirements.  He leads by example within the troop.

Eagles soar above their peers.  Only 1 out of 100 scouts attain Eagle.  The combination of leadership, mentoring, merit badge work, community service, and a belief in the Scout Oath and Law make these individuals truly remarkable.

Troop 311 recognizes the importance of self ownership to any task.  Rank advancement must come from the individual scout to be meaningful.  We encourage each scout to reach First Class in their first year.  After First Class, scouts are encouraged to advance one rank per year.  Each scout is different and the time needed for advancement will vary.  For complete rank requirements, consult the Boy Scout Handbook.
