Pinewood Derby Rules
2013
1. All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. The inspectors have the right
to disqualify those cars that do not meet race specifications. The inspection points are as
follows:
A. The car must be made from an Official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Kit. Kits
are available from the local Scout Store located at Eastgate and Sunshine in Springfield
or from the pack. No other kits are allowed.
B. The car must have been made during the current school year in which the
derby is held.
C. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¼ inches. Track guide is 1 ½ inches,
wheel track needs to be at least that wide to clear the racing surface.
D. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
E. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
F. Axles, wheels and body wood shall be as provided in the kit that must be
purchased from the pack or at the Scout Store. Colored Official BSA wheels are
available.
G. Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited.
H. Car wheels may only be modified to remove any manufacturing
imperfections. The wheel shape may not be changed e.g. rounding or pointing to change
the contact area. All modifications are subject to inspection.
I. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
J. Any details added must be within length, width, and weight limits.
K. The car must be freewheeling, with no starter devices.
L. No loose materials of any kind “such as lead shot” are allowed in the car.
M. Only dry lubricant on wheel axle “e.g. graphite powder” is allowed.
N. The judges will apply a temporary sticker to each car for identification
purposes only.
2. After cars are inspected and labeled they will be quarantined and owners will not
be able to handle or modify their cars until the race is completed.
3. Each heat will be announced. The race official will place cars on the track and
start each race. At the end of each run, Race Officials will pick up the cars and return
them to the staging area or pits. If the car breaks after check in 5 minutes will be given to
make repairs and rejoin the race.
4. Only Race Officials are allowed past the track barrier. Stepping or Jumping over
the Race Track is Prohibited. Violators will be subject to the mean Cub Master and can
be disqualified.
5. The winning order for each heat will be determined by electronic sensor. Each
car will run in each of the four lanes. The car with the fastest accumulated time wins.
6. First, Second, and Third Place winners for fastest car will be given for each den.
First Place will also be awarded to the fastest overall car for the entire pack. Other
awards may be given at the discretion of the race officials who shall be viewed as the
nicest people around. Awards will also be given for Most Patriotic, Best Design, and
Best Scout Design.
