Girl Scouts around the world are learning about the effects of waste on our environment, and discovering ways to reduce waste.

Smithville Troop 32 will be collecting juice pouches at the Primary Elementary School & the Upper Elementary School during the 2012-2013 school year. We will then recycle them through TerraCycle.

Every year BILLIONS of drink pouches end up in dumpsters and landfillsacross America. TerraCycle®, Capri Sun® and Honest Kids® are workingtogether to put an end to this tremendous loss of resources. As aneco-friendly innovator, TerraCycle® converts pre and post-consumer drinkpouch waste material into cool new upcycled products (http://www.terracycle.com/en-US/product_categories/school/products.html).

TerraCycle's purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste. They do this bycreating national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable orhard-to-recycle waste. Anyone can sign up for these programs, called theBrigades, and start sending waste.

TerraCycle then converts the collected waste into a wide variety ofproducts and materials. With more than 20 million people collectingwaste in over 20 countries TerraCycle has diverted billions of units ofwaste and used them to create over 1,500 different products available atmajor retailers ranging from Walmart to Whole Foods Market.

The goal is to eliminate the idea of waste by creating collection andsolution systems for anything that today must be sent to a landfill.

Founded in 2001 by Tom Szaky, then a 20-year-old Princeton Universityfreshman, TerraCycle began by producing organic fertilizer, packagingliquid worm poop in used soda bottles. Since then TerraCycle has growninto one of the fastest-growing green companies in the world.
