Troop #134, Waterford Michigan

About our Troop:
Troop #134 meets at the VFW Hall North of M-59 on the East side of Airport Road in Waterford.  The hall is located directly across the road from the Oakland International Airport Road.  It can easily be found by looking for the helicopter in front of the hall.  Our meetings are Monday nights from 7:00 until 8:30.

I've been here almost a year and a half already.  Does time Fly!  I kept hearing about this being out of date, but we've been to busy to keep up with it.  Anyway, I thought I'd get it done.  If you're looking for a Troop, hopefully this gives you a tickle.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with us, we don't have much use for tents.  Now and then we'll get them out.  If we take tents, more times than not, they're the old white canvas.  Usually we use tarps or a diamond fly or nothing at all!  Propane is taboo!  We do use backpacking stoves on the trail, but other than that we burn on the fire and cook over coals.  For places were ground fires are not allowed, we have braziers to cook on.  It's an old fashioned bbq grill.  Check this one out: http://www.randrmetalworks.com/prod_lgbrazier.htm.  So if you're in for a different type of adventure, and don't like the yogi bear type of camping that is permeating us these days, join us for a weekend and do it old style!

This year's Camps:

October 8-10 - Attica Muzzleloading Rendezvous (Lapeer, MI)
This was at the Lapeer Sportsmens Club for the fall muzzleloading rendezvous.  This was our first, pretty much complete separation of the Scouts and Adults and did it ever go well!  The Scouts somehow didn't pull of their shopping trip for food and as such ate from the dry goods box for the weekend.  This was basically dry goods unused on previous backpacking trips.  Yes, you can use pancakes for bread.  What do you mean you need milk?  I saw powdered milk in the box!  No, we will not go to the store to get you a chicken and bread.  Parents, you saved $10 on food for the next trip!  The Scouts did their very own Court of Honor on this trip.  It was quite IMPRESSIVE!!!!  I can't wait for the next one.  They came up with the entire ceremony, prepped it and performed it.

October 29-31 - JLT Weekend (Clarkston, MI) *Restricted
This is a training weekend that is only for the youth leadership (the green bar) in the Troop.

November 12-14 - Survival Skills (Highland, MI)
What do you mean I get a garbage bag for a shelter?  I'm planning on building a live trap for the weekend.  No animals will be hurt through the weekend.  As far as Scouts, well, that remains to be determined yet.

December 10-12 - Cold Butt Camp (Toledo, OH)
We're heading to Camp Miakonda this weekend.  It'll be one night in the adirondacks, and one night in the fort.  A bit of skills for the weekend and some geocaching.  This is their cabin trip.  What heat?

January 18-30 - HODAG (Lake Orion, MI)
This is the winter camporee put on by the good ol OA.  The sled's been recently painted and ready to go!  I'm sure it's even lighter now LOL.

February 12-13 Chief Pontiac Trail Winter Trek (Highland/Commerce, MI)
This is our third CPT hike this year.  Some of our members should be receiving their circle the fire patch after this.  We've done the 16mile hike and the canoe trip as well.  These have been really enjoyable trips and we're looking forward to some more like them.

March 15-27 Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (Dayton, OH)
Some of our Scouts did this a few years back with another Troop and wanted to go again with this Troop.  For those of you that haven't been you should check it out online.  It's an incredible air force museum.  If you're into history, this isn't a one day visit!  Five monster hangers full of hundreds of plans from avaiation day one and forward into the future.

April 22-24 Video Game Weekend (Ortonville, MI)
Nuff said?  Oh yes, the cabin doesn't have electricity.  The Scouts will get one tank of gas on the generator, then it's on to board games.  Yes, that's those dusty games that don't have cords attached.  No, they are not carved out of stone!

May 20-22 VFW Camporee (Commerce, MI)
This is a camporee put on by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  It's a skills type of a weekend for some skills that Scout should know, and others that aren't covered in the book, but they should know.  This is one of the trips the Scouts look forward to every year.

May 20-22 OA Conclave (Clare, MI) *Restricted
Spring OA Conclave at Lost Lake Scout Reservation in Clare.  This weekend is only open to Arrowmen and candidates.
