A STORYBOOK CHRISTMAS

A STORYBOOK CHRISTMAS
Established in 1991

Are your scout troops looking for a great service project?  Storybook Christmas might be the answer.

Storybook Christmas was established in 1991 with the intention of giving children ages 3-10 in McLennan County a book of their own.  Annually Storybook Christmas delivers thousands of books to schools in the county.  With illiteracy at such a high rate, it is important to encourage our children to read at an early age.  Many of your scouts may have been the recipient of one of these books.

In an effort to include more children in giving back to the community, we would like to encourage your troops to help raise money for Storybook Christmas or collect age-appropriate books.  There are many ways they can do this and are only limited by their imagination.  A few suggestions are:

  • Hold a fundraiser – i.e. bake sale, raffle, etc.
  • Bring a new age-appropriate book to a scout meeting
  • Collect loose change in a jar at each meeting for the purchase of books

In return, Storybook Christmas can help you by:

  • Being available to meet with your leaders and further explain Storybook Christmas and how the scouts can help
  • Receiving funds collected and purchase books (Troops can purchase books themselves if they wish, but if Storybook Christmas does it we get a better rate as we buy in volume.)
  • Being available to answer any questions

We are excited about the prospect of having the scouts involved in Storybook Christmas and look forward to hearing from you.

Children's Garden Fare

On October 12th at the Arboretum there is a free event that we can volunteer at.

It is from 2-5

There are about 900 children that go this event and do free crafts and take home fun stuff.

Master Naturalist Chapter is looking for volunteers to help with an activity called "fish Painting"

They have rubber fish.  The children paint the fish and then press a paper over it to transfer the picture onto paper.

The papers are hung on a clothesline to dry and they pick them up later to take them home with them. Each fish has to be washed between each child participant.  It is not hard work but a hard 3 hours with lots of children to make happy.

Please LET Max Burns KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS EVENT.

YMCA 10K Race

October 4th 7:30 - till the runners are finished, maybe 10:30.

Fill water cups and hand them to runners as they pass your water station.

Help pick up after the race.

This can count toward the Cadette community service bar, volunteer requirements for school, or a warm feeling inside yourself for living the Girl Scout promise.

There is a sheet in the Girl Guide where you can keep track of your volunteer activities and hours.
